The only city in the Basilicata region soaked from the Tirreno sea.  Maratea is known for its wonderful sea, a coast rich of inlets (coves-creeks) and its famous statue of the Redeemer by Bruno Innocenti, standing at 22mts high on top of  Mount San Biagio, looking over the port, similar to the statue in Rio de Janiero on Mount Corcovado. From Maratea you can easily reach other beach resorts of the Policastro Gulf, from Punta degli Infreschi in Cilento to Cape Scalea in Alto Tirreno Cosentino. The old town of Maratea offers a splendid concentration of buildings, churches and monuments of great historical and architectonic value. For this reason Maratea is known as the city of the 44 churches, rich in precious artistic evidence. The holiday season lasts for 10 months a year. Many are the attractions sea, fishing, history, cooking and many  cultural events of national importance.


 



                                  MARATEA – ITS CAVES (GROTTOS)

You can find the Grotto of  Wonders in the San Giuseppe area on the slopes of Mount  ”La  Serra” near the Valley of  Mantenia. It is also called Marina di Maratea with its entrance at 76mts above sea level. 




 

                                      THE MASSIF OF MOUNT SIRINO

Includes some of the major peaks of the southern Apennines: Mount Papa(2,005m), Peak de Lorenzo (2,004m), Mount Sirino (1,907m). Having an impressive dense appearance the mountainous group is situated near the Tirreno sea in the south western part of the Basilicata region dominating the valleys furrowed by the rivers Noce, Sinni and Agri. Situated on the rock are 2 Ski resorts connected by ski lifts. Lake Laudemio and the Conserva di Lauria. Other than winter sports, the Laudemio and Conserva  complex is the ideal place for horse, mountain and foot excursions.

The lake has an elliptic shape, if seen from above it looks like a tadpole, it stretches for about  3 hectares with a length of  300mts and a width of 150mts, depth 10/15mts depending in the season, fed by perennial springs it does not have a visible effluent. Advised are the itineraries  to clear fresh springs, also Trekking excursions to Mount Sirino near the old Calabro-lucano rail track or towards the suburbs of Nemoli or a glance of the other villages in the valley by air.
