The long story of Naples starts about 3000 years ago, with the arrival of Greek sailors from Rhodes in the Aegean Sea, landed on a small island then called Megaride (where there is nowadays Castel dell’Ovo) to start their commercial trades. They then founded Partenope, taking the name from one of the mermaids described by Ulysses that, according to legend, come to die in these waters. In 475 AD Partenope, that was included in that part of the coast at the footsteps of Mount Echia (called now Mount di Dio), went beyond those borders that had become too tight for the remarkable increase of trade, so the new settling spread over this promontory giving birth to the city of NEAPOLIS (new city).
And from here we wish to start telling you a wonderful story…
and accompany you in a journey through colours, architecture, history, monuments, odours and traditions of a population that, through centuries, has been transformed, amalgamated, adapted to the customs of so many different cultures, giving birth to a unique and unrivalled city… NAPLES, where have been moving people from almost all over the world, from the Greeks to the Latin and the Arabs, from the Swabians to the Normans, the Germans, the Spaniards, the French, the English………..
if in today’s modern language “globalisation” means a great world with no more borders, it is necessary to know that Naples has started its globalisation 3000 years ago.
“for its beauty and fertility, the Gods compete for the possession of the city”(Polibio, Greek historian of the 2nd century B.C.)
”Today I went mad with joy, I have dedicated my time to these incomparable beauties. The beach, the gulf, the sea’s coves, Vesuvio, the city, the suburbs, the castles, the villas. I have forgiven all those that lose the head for this city.”(Johann Wolfang von Goethe – 27th of February 1787)
And it is our wish… to make you lose your head for this city, and we want to follow a path of history and images…to help you doing it!!!
