DIANO VALLUM
ATENA LUCANA AND ITS OLD TOWN
Atena Lucana is the most ancient settling of the Diano Vallum. One must visit the Sanctuary of Saint Mary of the Doves, situated outside the urban tracing it preserves a XV century plaster statue, a XVII century wooden polychrome sculpture and the beautiful balustrade made from Padula stone attributed to Andrea Carrara. The walls present 1713 frescoes of Anselmo Palmieri representing stories of Mary. The Sangro Sanctuary, of medieval origins and Palazzo Spagna, datable to the end of the 600’s, having a main door of stone with the family coat of arms in the centre. Of particular importance is the Archaeological museum which hosts archaeological evidence, epigraphs, etc. Not to miss the historical revocation in CAMPO ATINATE in August.
THE CARTHISIAN MONASTERY OF SAN LORENZO A PADULA
The second biggest Carthisian Monastery in Europe, inserted by UNESCO in the Humanity heritage. In its impressive cuisine a legendary omelette was made with 1000 eggs in honour of Charles V (1535) and tradition wants that every year on 10th August (Saint Lorenzo) the local people celebrate with the realization of an enormous omelette. Inside the monastery is the Archaeological museum of west Lucania.
BAPTISTERY OF SAINT GIOVANNI IN FONTE
Not far from the Carthisian Monastery is the impressive Baptistery of Saint Giovanni in Fonte, built in the IV century on a clear and abundant spring which surrounds and partially enters the baptistery .
TEGGIANO AND ITS OLD TOWN
A small city of art in the Diano Vallum, it was seat of San Severino in the renamed castle of Macchiaroli. Every year from the 11th to 13th August a Historical revocation takes place “alla tavola della principessa Costanza” (at Princess Constance table) to remember the marriage of Antonello Sanseverino , Lord of the Diano with Costanza da Montefeltro celebrated in 1480. For the occasion not only are the antique costumes worn but also the currency used in that period circulates. You may visit various museums like the Museum of Erbe and the museum of Diocesano, churches and the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Mary Major. Through the alleys of the village it is possible to taste local products of ancient Dianum.
ORCHID VALLEY OF SASSANO
A small valley on the east slope of Mount Cervati, from early spring it offers a variety of excursions, the roads lead to the top allowing who ever to climb the mountain and enjoy its charm. Fascinating is the small sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve.
THE ANGEL GROTTO OF PERTOSA
An impressive tour of 3000mts under the Alburni, is the destination of many tourists every year. Until September 2008 there is the showing of an emotional show “L’Inferno di Dante” inside the Pertosa Grotto’s.
